new bookmarklet howto

new bookmarklet!

also get annoyed by twitter shortening urls for you using bit.ly?

same here! if a url needs to be shortened, let it be shortened by your own url shortener! we created a solution to that: a bookmarklet that shortens any url in the twitter status update field.

how to use it: (this example uses smrl.tk)

  1. you drag this bookmarklet “shorten link!” to your browser bookmarklets bar (internet explorer users need to add it to their favorites)
  2. you go to twitter.com and start typing your new status message.
  3. before hitting update, you hit your new bookmarklet!
  4. any url in there will be shortened and the status message will be altered.
  5. then you press update and your message is posted!

for all you brizzly users out there, this also works for that. if you wish to see more twitter web clients added, let us know on twitter (@smrls)

please note: you can find the bookmarklet link for your own url shortener by going to the main page of your url shortener and pressing bookmarklet.

added latest tweets!

one of the main reasons to shorten urls, is ofcourse twitter. when you share any link on twitter, you want those links to be short, as it only allows 140 chars. we think its pretty cool you use your own smrl for that.

because of that: from this moment on, tweets that contain smrl urls will be displayed on site!

your target audience just got a bit bigger! :)

use your own domain

frequently people ask if its possible to use a non .tk domain with smrls. in most cases the person who requests this already owns a domain and wants to use it for url shortening.

this is possible and quite simple!

you need to setup forwarding for your domain. this means that a request to your domain, ie, example.com, should be forwarded to smrls. hits on the entire domain should be forwarded, meaning that ie http://example.com/1 should be forwarded to smrls as well.

you need to set up forwarding to: http://srv.smrls.net/.

if you need help with this, drop an email or ask via twitter.
